Claude Fable 5.5: Release Date, Rumors and What's Confirmed
Updated 2026-10-08
Claude Fable 5.5 has not been announced. As of October 8, 2026, Anthropic has published no model called "Fable 5.5" – no launch post, no API model ID, no price and no release date. The newest Fable model in Anthropic's documentation is Claude Fable 5.1, released September 1, 2026. Everything you see about "Fable 5.5" comes from social media posts, leaks and third-party speculation, which have spiked since Anthropic launched the Claude 5.5 family with Opus 5.5 on September 22.
Here is what is actually confirmed, why the name is circulating, and what you can use today.
Is Fable 5.5 out?
No. Searches for "fable 5.5" jumped in late September 2026, right after Opus 5.5 shipped, and have stayed high since. But a model only exists once Anthropic lists it. For every past Claude launch – including Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 – that meant, on day one:
- an announcement on Anthropic's newsroom,
- a new model ID in the API models overview,
- published input / output and cache prices,
- a system card,
- a row in the model deprecations table.
None of these exist for Fable 5.5 as of this writing. When Anthropic introduced Opus 5.5, the announcement named two follow-up models in the 5.5 family – Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. Fable was not on that list. Sonnet 5.5 has since launched (September 28, 2026).
Where the "Fable 5.5" name comes from
The name is a community guess, built on the version number of the new family. Opus jumped from 5 to 5.5, so people assume the next Fable will be 5.5 too. But Fable has moved on its own schedule: Fable 5 (June 9, 2026) was followed by Fable 5.1 (September 1, 2026), not 5.5. Nothing guarantees the next Fable will use the 5.5 number.
There are also claims that Claude is "secretly" serving a newer Fable under the 5.1 label. These rest on screenshots and demos. Anthropic's own documentation on model versions says a model ID points to one fixed snapshot and that new weights get a new ID – so a demo can't prove an unannounced model swap.

Fable 5.1 vs Opus 5.5: what to use today
Anthropic positions Fable 5.1 as its most capable generally available model, for demanding reasoning and long, multi-step agentic work. It now recommends Opus 5.5 as the starting point for most workloads, and its Opus 5.5 announcement said Opus performs at the level of Fable 5.1 on most work – at roughly 2.5 times lower token prices.
A practical rule:
- Start with Opus 5.5 for coding, writing and analysis. It is cheaper and, per Anthropic, close to Fable on most tasks.
- Escalate to Fable 5.1 for the hardest long-horizon tasks where Opus at higher effort still falls short.
- Use Sonnet 5.5 or Haiku-class models for high-volume, cost-sensitive jobs.

When could a new Fable arrive?
Anthropic has published no Fable roadmap. The only data point is history: Fable 5.1 came 84 days after Fable 5. That is not a forecast – Anthropic can release on any schedule and under any version number. Treat any specific "Fable 5.5 release date" circulating on social media as a rumor unless it links to an Anthropic page.
How to know when Fable 5.5 (or the next Fable) is real
Watch Anthropic's own channels, not the name:
- Newsroom post naming the model.
- New model ID in the API docs, separate from claude-fable-5-1.
- Rate card with input, output and cache prices.
- System card published alongside the launch.
If the next Fable ships under a different version number, these signals still catch it. We'll update this page when Anthropic confirms anything.
