How it works

  1. Step 1

    Enter your marks

Type the marks you got in each subject and what the subject is out of (100, 80, 50 …).

  2. Step 2

    Add or remove subjects

Use as many rows as your marksheet has. Empty rows are ignored.

  3. Step 3

    Read your percentage

See your overall percentage, the total marks and the percentage for every subject at once.

How to calculate the percentage of marks

The percentage of marks is the marks you obtained divided by the total (maximum) marks, multiplied by 100. If you scored 420 out of 500, your percentage is 420 ÷ 500 × 100 = 84%. For a full marksheet, add up the marks you obtained in all subjects and divide by the sum of the maximum marks – not by the number of subjects. This calculator does both: it shows the percentage for every subject and the overall percentage, and it also handles subjects that are out of different totals, for example theory out of 80 and practicals out of 20.

Overall percentage vs. average of subject percentages

When all subjects have the same maximum marks, the overall percentage and the average of the subject percentages are the same. When the maximum marks differ, they are not: the overall percentage weights each subject by its maximum marks, the simple average treats every subject equally. Boards and universities almost always use total marks obtained ÷ total maximum marks, which is the big number shown here. The average per subject is shown below it for comparison.

Best of five and selected subjects

Some boards calculate the percentage from the best five subjects or leave out additional subjects. To do that, simply enter only the subjects that count, or clear the marks of the ones that don't – empty rows are skipped. Always check your board's or admission office's own rules, because the subjects that count can differ between boards, courses and years.

Percentage, CGPA and grades

A percentage is not the same as a CGPA or a letter grade. Converting CGPA to a percentage uses a formula set by each board or university (some multiply by a fixed factor, others publish their own table), so use the official conversion rule of your institution instead of a generic one. This page works with raw marks only.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my percentage from marks?

Divide the marks you obtained by the maximum marks and multiply by 100. Example: 360 out of 450 = 360 ÷ 450 × 100 = 80%.

How do I calculate the percentage of marks for 5 subjects?

Add the marks you got in all five subjects, add the maximum marks of all five, divide the first sum by the second and multiply by 100. Enter the five subjects above and the calculator does it for you.

What if subjects are out of different totals?

Enter each subject's own maximum marks. The overall percentage uses total marks obtained ÷ total maximum marks, so a subject out of 100 counts more than one out of 50.

Are my marks saved or uploaded?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
