ChatGPT Dots (GPT Dots): What They Are, Who Gets Them, How to Start

Updated 2026-10-09

ChatGPT dots – also searched as "GPT dots" or "OpenAI dots" – are always-on AI agents that OpenAI launched on September 29, 2026 at DevDay. Each dot runs on GPT-6 Astra, has its own cloud computer and browser, and keeps working on a goal between your conversations, then brings results back for you to review. They are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets; the first dot is included in those plans at no extra cost.

Below is what is confirmed so far, who can use dots, and how to set one up. Details come from OpenAI's launch announcement and its help pages, as reported on launch day; OpenAI can change plans and limits at any time, so check your ChatGPT settings for the current state.

What a dot actually is

A normal ChatGPT chat stops when you stop typing. A dot doesn't. You give it a goal – anything from booking a table to tracking a longer project – connect the apps it needs, and decide how much it may do on its own. The dot then:

  • works on its own cloud computer and browser, which you can open at any time to see what it is doing;
  • remembers progress between conversations and works out the next step as things change;
  • learns from your feedback over time;
  • does proactive research in the background when you're not talking to it – OpenAI says this uses read-only tools that cannot send messages, edit app content or control the computer.

OpenAI's own examples: a dot that noticed an unsent invoice, prepared it and sent it after the user approved; and a dot watching customer feedback for an app that builds and tests fixes and returns pull requests.

Who can use ChatGPT dots

At launch (late September 2026):

  • ChatGPT Pro – rolling out in eligible markets, excluding the EEA, Switzerland and the UK.
  • Business Premium – rolling out in all supported ChatGPT regions.
  • Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces – a beta an administrator can switch on; it is off by default.
  • Free, Go and Plus – not included at launch.

Is it free? Pricing and limits

There is no separate "dots" price at launch. Your first dot is included in a Pro or Business Premium plan, with extended usage limits during the first month after launch. Talking to your dot does not count toward your ChatGPT message limits; tasks it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work count as usual. OpenAI says it plans to let you run more dots and buy more speed or monthly workload per dot later.

At the same event OpenAI introduced Pro 500, a $500-per-month Pro tier with the highest usage. You don't need it for dots – the standard Pro plan includes one.

How to set up your first dot

  1. Create it on desktop. New dots are created in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser – open dots in ChatGPT and follow the introduction.
  2. Connect apps. Email, calendar, files and more – dots reach more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI's plugin ecosystem. You can skip this and add apps later.
  3. Write Custom Rules. Decide what the dot may do on its own, when it must ask first, and what it must never do. Some actions, like changing a password, always stay with you.
  4. Give it a goal and talk to it. You can message or call your dot in ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, and message it in Slack and Microsoft Teams. Texting is announced as coming soon.

Linking your own personal computer is optional and starts switched off.

Safety: what a dot will and won't do

Dots run an auto-review step that checks actions which could affect your accounts or share information against your instructions, your rules and OpenAI's safety requirements. Saved passwords used to sign in to websites are not exposed to the model. OpenAI's monitoring can pause or stop a dot if it detects a problem – and OpenAI itself says dots can still make mistakes, so keep approval on for anything that sends, buys or deletes.

Dots vs. Meta Muse and Gemini Spark

Dots are part of a wave of "personal agents" in 2026. Meta launched its Muse personal AI agent in the US on September 8, and Google announced Gemini Spark, a 24/7 agent in the Gemini app, at I/O in May. The common idea is the same – an assistant that keeps working when you are away. Dots' distinguishing points at launch are the dedicated cloud computer you can inspect, Custom Rules, and the Slack/Teams access.

What to use if you don't have Pro

If you're on a Free or Plus plan, or in the EEA, UK or Switzerland, you can't create a dot yet. You can still get a lot of "agent-like" help by writing better one-off prompts – our free ChatGPT prompt generator turns a rough idea into a detailed, structured prompt you can paste into any chat.
