How it works
Step 1
Describe the family or setting
Trade, region and era help: 'farming family, rural Ireland, 1850s'.
Step 2
Pick an origin or style
Choose a country, a region style, Modern American or Fantasy.
Step 3
Read the meaning and shortlist
Keep surnames that suit the family's story, and say them with the first name aloud.
Surnames that match the story
Most real surnames began as an occupation, a place, a nickname or a parent's name, and that is why a believable surname makes a character feel rooted. This generator produces 20 surnames for the origin you choose, each with a short note on its usual source. It suits fiction writers, game masters, character creators, and anyone building a cast who wants names that do not all sound alike. The notes are brief orientation, not genealogical research; for real family history use records.
Where surnames come from
Occupational names such as Smith, Baker or Schneider (tailor) point to a trade. Place names such as Hill, Ashworth or Lombardi point to where a family lived or came from. Patronymics such as Johnson, O'Brien or Fitzgerald say whose child someone was. Descriptive names such as Brown, Short or Armstrong began as nicknames. Knowing the type helps you build a plausible family history.
Pairing surnames with first names
Say the whole name out loud. Avoid first and last names that end and begin with the same sound, or that rhyme. Mix short and long: a one-syllable first name usually goes well with a longer surname. For a cast, vary the first letter of main characters' surnames so readers do not confuse them.
Fantasy and modern styles
Choose Fantasy for invented surnames; the notes will say they are invented. Choose Modern American for contemporary, mixed-heritage-sounding surnames that suit present-day settings. In both cases, describe the setting to guide tone.
