Gemini Error 1155 "Something Went Wrong": How to Fix It
Updated 2026-10-09
Gemini error 1155 shows up as "Something went wrong (1155)" in the Gemini app or on gemini.google.com, usually after a few messages. Google hasn't published an official meaning for the code, but the fixes users and Gemini community experts report most often are: turn off any VPN or proxy, sign out of Gemini and back in, clear the site data for gemini.google.com, and try another network or a private window. If none of that helps, check whether Gemini itself is having an outage before you change anything else.
Work through the steps below in order – the first two fix most cases.
What error 1155 means
Gemini shows a number in brackets after "Something went wrong" to tell its errors apart – 1155, 1152, 1099, 1076 and others. Google doesn't document what each number means. In the Gemini Apps Community threads about 1155, the answers point to the connection or session between your browser and Gemini: a VPN or proxy, a stale sign-in, or broken site data. That fits the pattern users describe – Gemini works for a few messages, then 1155 appears and every new message fails.
Fix 1: Turn off your VPN or proxy
This is the fix mentioned most. Disable your VPN, proxy, "secure DNS" extension or any privacy relay, reload Gemini and send the message again. If you use a work or school network, it may route traffic through a proxy you don't control – try the next steps or another network.
Fix 2: Sign out of Gemini and sign back in
Click your profile picture in the top-right corner of Gemini, sign out completely, close the tab, then open gemini.google.com and sign in again. If you use several Google accounts in one browser, sign out of all of them and sign in only with the account you use for Gemini – mixed accounts are a common cause of session errors, especially with Google Workspace accounts.
Fix 3: Clear site data for gemini.google.com
Clearing all browsing data isn't necessary. In Chrome: click the icon left of the address bar → Site settings → Delete data (or Clear data), then reload. In other browsers, remove cookies and cached files for gemini.google.com only. Then hard-refresh the page (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac).
Fix 4: Try a private window, another browser or another network
- Open Gemini in an Incognito / private window. If it works there, an extension is the likely cause – switch off ad blockers and script blockers one by one.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or the other way round).
- On the phone, update the Gemini or Google app, or force-close and reopen it.
Fix 5: Check whether Gemini is down
If the error appears for everyone at once, no setting on your side will fix it. During a Gemini outage in June 2026, users saw codes such as 1099 and 1076 across web, Android, iOS and Gemini in Chrome. Check Google's status pages, a site like Downdetector, or recent posts on Reddit's r/GoogleGeminiAI. If others report the same code right now, wait and try again later.
Fix 6: Workspace and very long chats
- Google Workspace (work/school) accounts: your administrator can switch Gemini off or restrict it. If 1155 only happens with your work account, ask your admin whether Gemini is enabled for you.
- Very long conversations: some users find the error comes back in one long chat but not in a fresh one. Start a new chat and paste the key context.
Other Gemini "Something went wrong" codes
- 1099 – appeared widely during service disruptions; often clears on its own when Gemini recovers.
- 1152 – reported when Gemini can't establish a stable session; the same fixes as 1155 apply.
- 1076 – also seen during outages.
Google doesn't publish official definitions for these numbers either, so the same order applies: VPN off → sign out/in → clear site data → other network → check for an outage.
