FilmCraft: The Free, Open-Source Premiere Pro Alternative
Updated 2026-10-11
Short answer: FilmCraft is a free, open-source non-linear video editor that copies the Adobe Premiere Pro workflow – Source and Program monitors, a multi-track timeline, the same workspaces, tools and shortcuts – rebuilt from scratch in Rust by the ArtCraft team. It includes color grading, audio mixing, titles and captions, writes its own H.264, HEVC, ProRes and AAC codecs instead of using FFmpeg, and runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. As of October 2026 it is still in development.
FilmCraft is one of the seven ArtCraft apps released in October 2026, next to PhotoCraft and VectorCraft. Its GitHub repository storytold/filmcraft describes it as a "clean-room reimplementation" of Premiere Pro, licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. It is not made by Adobe and is not affiliated with it. On October 11, 2026 the repository showed about 8,900 stars and 3,300 forks.
Note: "FilmCraft" is also an older name used by unrelated film-industry products and events. This guide is about the open-source video editor.
Editing features
From the FilmCraft README:
- A familiar timeline. Source and Program monitors, bins with thumbnails, multi-track timeline with patch/target buttons, sync locks and linked selection; Editing, Assembly, Color, Effects and Audio workspaces with dockable panels.
- Three-point editing with insert ( , ) and overwrite ( . ), lift and extract.
- Every trim tool. Ripple, roll, slip, slide, rate stretch and razor; a Trim Monitor and dynamic J-K-L trimming during playback.
- Exact time. Edits are calculated on integer ticks, so 23.976, 29.97 drop-frame and 59.94 fps stay exact and edits never drift.
- Pro details. Colored markers (exportable as CSV), nesting, ripple delete, snapping, unlimited undo with a History panel.
- Your shortcuts. A keyboard-shortcut editor with presets for FilmCraft, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and Avid layouts.
- Crash safety. Atomic saves, rolling auto-save versions and a recovery journal written about a second after each edit.
Color, effects, audio and titles
- Color: a Lumetri-style panel – basic correction, eight built-in creative looks, RGB and hue/saturation curves, color wheels, HSL secondary keying and vignette – with waveform and vectorscope computed from the graded frame, all in 32-bit linear light.
- Effects: the README claims Premiere 26's full Video Effects bin (93 effects in 16 folders) plus about 30 transitions, keyframes with Bezier, hold and ease, and 26 blend modes, on a GPU compositor (Metal, Vulkan, DirectX 12, WebGPU).
- Audio: loudness meters to ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128, EQ, filters, dynamics, limiter, reverb, DeNoise and DeHummer, track and clip mixers with automation.
- Titles and captions: a text engine with OpenType shaping, type and shape tools on the Program monitor, caption tracks (Subtitle, CEA-608/708, Teletext) and SRT, WebVTT and SCC import/export.
Formats and codecs
FilmCraft doesn't bundle FFmpeg; the team wrote its own codecs from the public specifications and tests them against FFmpeg.
| Format | Decode | Encode (export) |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 / AVC | Yes | Yes (MP4 with AAC) |
| HEVC / H.265 | Yes | 8-bit via hardware encoders |
| Apple ProRes | Yes (422 Proxy to 4444 XQ) | 422 HQ |
| Avid DNxHD / DNxHR | Yes | DNxHR in MOV |
| VP9, AV1, Opus | Yes | Not yet (AV1 export listed as missing) |
| MP4 / MOV, Matroska / WebM | Yes | MP4 / MOV |
| Camera RAW | Not yet | – |
Hardware decoding works on macOS, Windows and (for H.264/HEVC) Linux.
How ready is FilmCraft?
The official Crafting Apps page lists FilmCraft as "In development". The feature list is long, but speed, stability on long projects and exchange with real Premiere projects are what matter for paid work – test those on a copy of your footage before you rely on it. For a deadline today, mature free editors such as DaVinci Resolve's free version or Kdenlive are the safer choice; FilmCraft is for people who think in Premiere shortcuts and want to watch an open-source rebuild grow.
How to download FilmCraft
- Go to getartcraft.com/apps/filmcraft, or install the ArtCraft Launcher, which installs and updates every Crafting App.
- Or pick an installer for macOS, Windows or Linux from the repository's Releases page on GitHub.
- Only download from getartcraft.com or
github.com/storytold.
Built for AI agents
Every action in FilmCraft is a command, so an AI agent can drive the editor through a control protocol, the same way the other Crafting Apps expose an MCP server. That makes it interesting for automated rough cuts and captioning workflows. Need a script before you edit? Try our free AI story generator for ideas.
