VectorCraft: The Free, Open-Source Illustrator Alternative
Updated 2026-10-11
Short answer: VectorCraft is a free, open-source vector illustration app that copies the Adobe Illustrator workflow – Pen tool, Direct Selection, Pathfinder, Appearance, Swatches, Layers and the familiar shortcuts – rebuilt from scratch in Rust by the ArtCraft team. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD and in the browser, imports and exports SVG and PDF, and is licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. As of October 2026 it is alpha software.
VectorCraft is one of seven ArtCraft apps released in October 2026 (alongside PhotoCraft and FilmCraft). Its GitHub repository, storytold/vectorcraft, calls it a "clean-room reimplementation" of Illustrator. It is not made by Adobe and is not affiliated with it. On October 11, 2026 the repository showed about 6,300 stars and 2,700 forks.
What VectorCraft can do
The project's README lists:
- Illustrator's layout and tools. Pen and Direct Selection with real Bézier anchors and handles, Pathfinder and Shape Builder, Smart Guides, Appearance, Swatches, Layers, multiple artboards.
- Advanced vector features. Live Blends, Gradient Mesh, live radial Repeat, Envelope Distort, a Perspective Grid, clipping masks, image tracing and live effects such as Outer Glow.
- Exact booleans. The team says curve booleans are exact, so you shouldn't see a "cannot perform operation" error, plus unlimited undo.
- Type. Text with styles, threading and right-to-left (Hebrew/Arabic) layout; vertical type has initial support.
- Speed. Rendering runs off the UI thread; the README states that 20,000 shapes render in about 27 ms at full retina resolution while the interface stays at 120 fps.
File formats
This is what decides whether you can actually switch:
| Format | Support in VectorCraft |
|---|---|
| SVG | Import and export (first-class) |
| PDF and PDF-compatible .ai | Import and export, incl. PDF/X |
| Native Illustrator .ai editing data | Not reliable yet – listed as missing |
| EPS, DXF, EMF/WMF | Supported |
| PNG, JPEG, WebP | Export, incl. Export for Screens (multi-size) |
| PSD/PSB | Opened as a merged image; PSD export |
| Affinity (.af, .afdesign, .afpub) | Opens layers, artboards, curves, fills, text; doesn't write Affinity files |
| Native format | .vectorcraft (documented JSON) |
The interface is available in English, German, Japanese, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian and Ukrainian.
How ready is VectorCraft?
The README is unusually honest. On October 10, 2026 the team's self-assessment was: about 88% of Illustrator 2026's menu items, tools, effects and formats exist, feature depth is around 75%, and roughly 65% "ready for real work" for a mainstream illustrator. Missing or incomplete: reliable exchange of real Illustrator .ai files, 3D and Materials beyond a first live Revolve, about half of the Photoshop-style raster effects, scripting, and generative AI features. These are the developers' own estimates, measured against Adobe's public documentation.
In practice: everyday drawing – logos, icons, posters, SVG for the web – is close to usable. Professional print work and files that must go back and forth with Illustrator users are not there yet.
How to download VectorCraft
- Easiest: open the VectorCraft page on getartcraft.com/apps/vectorcraft, or install the ArtCraft Launcher, which installs and updates all Crafting Apps.
- Specific builds are on the GitHub Releases page: Windows
.msior portable.zip(x64, ARM64, 32-bit, code-signed), a universal signed macOS.dmg, and Linux AppImage, Flatpak,.debor.rpm(x86_64 and ARM64). - No install: use the web (WebAssembly) build.
- Developers can build it with Cargo (
cargo run --release -p vectorcraft).
Using VectorCraft with AI agents
Every menu item, tool, panel and dialog can be driven over a JSON control channel and an MCP server. The README shows how to register it with Claude Code (claude mcp add vectorcraft -- /path/to/vectorcraft-cli mcp) and how to restrict the agent to one project folder. The example artworks in the repository were made entirely through that command API. A headless CLI can also batch-export files, for example to PDF.

VectorCraft vs Inkscape
Inkscape is the mature free vector editor with a long history and a large community. VectorCraft's pitch is different: it copies Illustrator's panels and shortcuts so Illustrator users feel at home, it is natively compiled Rust, and it is built to be scripted by AI agents. If you need stability today, Inkscape is the safer pick; if you think in Illustrator shortcuts and like early software, try VectorCraft.
FAQ
Is VectorCraft free? Yes. It is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0 and free to download and use.
Is VectorCraft made by Adobe? No. It's an independent ArtCraft project and not affiliated with Adobe.
Can VectorCraft open Illustrator files?
It opens PDF-compatible .ai files and many other formats, but full exchange of Illustrator's own .ai editing data is still listed as missing.
Does VectorCraft run on Linux?
Yes – AppImage, Flatpak, .deb and .rpm builds, plus FreeBSD and a browser version.
What's the difference between VectorCraft and PhotoCraft? VectorCraft is for vector illustration (paths, shapes, type – like Illustrator); PhotoCraft edits pixel images with layers (like Photoshop). Both come from the ArtCraft team.
