Dots vs Muse: ChatGPT Dots and Meta Muse Agent Compared
Updated 2026-10-11
Short answer: both are "personal AI agents" that keep working after you close the app, each on its own cloud computer with a browser. ChatGPT dots (OpenAI, announced September 29, 2026) run on GPT-6 Astra and are included in ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium. Meta's Muse (announced September 8, 2026) runs on Meta's Muse Spark model, is free for most uses with paid plans for more, and lives in its own app and in WhatsApp – but only in the US at launch. If you already pay for ChatGPT Pro and work in Slack or Teams, dots fit. If you are in the US, don't pay for Pro and live in WhatsApp, Muse is the easier start.
Below is a side-by-side of what each company has confirmed, and what is still unknown. Both products are new and change quickly, so check the official pages before you decide.

What a dot does
A dot is an always-on agent inside ChatGPT. You give it a goal, connect the apps it needs, and write Custom Rules for what it may do alone, when it must ask, and what it must never do. It works on its own cloud computer, remembers progress between conversations and brings results back for review. OpenAI also runs an auto-review step on actions that could affect your accounts. Our ChatGPT dots guide covers plans, limits and setup in detail.
What Muse does
Meta describes Muse as a personal agent "built for everyone": you message it like a person, in the Muse app or in WhatsApp, and it acts. Meta's own examples include sending an email, booking travel, filling out forms, negotiating a bill, turning a saved Instagram recipe reel into a grocery list and planning a dinner party. For long tasks it keeps working after you close the app and returns when something changes or when it needs your approval.
Muse runs on Muse Secure VM, a dedicated virtual machine that holds both the agent and your connected data. A separate Sentinel agent on the same machine has to approve anything that goes out to the internet. Meta says Muse never sees your passwords or payment details: credentials go into secure storage and payments use Link by Stripe's one-time-use cards. Meta says Shop Pay and 1Password support are coming, and a Muse Confidential VM (encrypted with a key only you hold) is planned for later in 2026.
The real differences
1. Access. This decides it for most people. Dots need a ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium plan, and Pro excludes Europe and the UK at launch. Muse is free to start, but only in the US.
2. Where you work. Dots sit inside ChatGPT and reach Slack and Teams – a work setup. Muse sits inside WhatsApp and its own app – a personal, phone-first setup.
3. Control style. Dots give you written rules up front (Custom Rules). Muse leans on approvals at the moment of action plus a full audit trail of what it did and plans to do. Both say they ask before sending email or making purchases.
4. Shopping. Meta built buying into Muse from day one (Link by Stripe, with Link's purchase protections). OpenAI's launch material for dots focuses on work tasks and app connections rather than checkout.
5. Data and training. Meta says Muse conversations and VM data are not shared with its ad systems, and you can opt out of training. Reporting at launch (The Rundown, September 9) also noted Meta can access data when needed to run or secure the service, and that prompt injection is still an unsolved problem for every agent – including both of these.
Which one should you pick?
- You pay for ChatGPT Pro or your company has Business Premium: start with a dot – it is already included.
- You are in the US, don't pay for Pro, and use WhatsApp daily: try Muse first – it is free for most tasks.
- You are in the EU or UK: neither is fully open to you yet (Business Premium is the exception for dots). Watch for regional rollouts.
- You want to automate purchases: Muse has the more complete payment story at launch. Keep approvals on either way.
Whichever agent you use, the quality of the goal you give it matters. Our free ChatGPT prompt generator turns a rough idea into a clear, structured instruction you can paste into a dot, Muse or any chat.
FAQ
Is Meta Muse free? Meta says Muse is free for most of what people need, with subscription plans for people who want to do more.
What model does Muse use? Muse Spark, which Meta calls its most capable model to date and built for agentic work.
Can I use Muse outside the US? Not at launch – Meta's announcement says it is rolling out in the US on iOS, Android and muse.ai, with AI glasses support coming.
Is "Muse agent" the same as Meta Muse? Yes. People search "Muse agent", "Meta Muse app" or "Meta Muse AI" for the same product. It is unrelated to older apps that also use the name Muse.
Do dots and Muse work together? No. They are separate products from OpenAI and Meta with no announced connection.
Which is safer? Both ask before sensitive actions and keep credentials away from the model. Neither company claims prompt injection is solved, so keep approval on for anything that sends, buys or deletes.
