EffectCraft: The Free, Open-Source After Effects Alternative
Updated 2026-10-12
Short answer: EffectCraft is a free, open-source motion graphics and compositing app from the ArtCraft team that rebuilds the Adobe After Effects workflow in Rust. It has compositions, layers, keyframes with a Graph Editor, a library of 306 effects, expressions, classic 3D with cameras and lights, Lottie import/export and a render queue. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and in the browser, and is licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. Its first commit was on 1 October 2026 – it is alpha software and cannot open After Effects (.aep) projects yet.
EffectCraft is not made by Adobe and is not affiliated with it. ArtCraft calls it a "clean-room reimplementation": the code is written from public information and from observing how the original behaves, not copied from it. It is one of the ArtCraft Crafting Apps, next to PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, FilmCraft and PdfCraft.
What is EffectCraft for?
EffectCraft is for the jobs people usually open After Effects for: animated titles, lower thirds, logo reveals, motion graphics and compositing. You build a composition out of layers – solids, shapes, text, footage, nested compositions, nulls, adjustment layers, cameras and lights – animate their properties with keyframes, stack effects on them and render the result.
The interface deliberately copies the familiar panel layout: Project, Composition, Timeline, Effect Controls, Effects & Presets, Character, Paragraph, Align, Preview, Audio and the Render Queue. Keyboard shortcuts follow the same pattern too – for example the property shortcuts A, P, S, R and T to reveal anchor point, position, scale, rotation and opacity, and F9 for Easy Ease. If you already know After Effects, most of your muscle memory carries over.
What EffectCraft can do today
According to the project's README on GitHub (checked October 12, 2026):
- Animation: linear, Bezier, hold, auto and continuous Bezier keyframes, roving keys, a Graph Editor with value and speed graphs, time remapping, time stretch, freeze frames and frame-accurate timing including 29.97 drop-frame.
- Shapes, masks and text: shape layers with trim paths, repeaters, wiggle and merge paths; pen-tool masks with feather and expansion; point and paragraph text with text animators.
- Expressions: JavaScript with an After Effects-style object model (
wiggle,loopOut,thisComp.layer(...)), with a pick-whip. - Effects: 306 effects across blur, color correction, distort, generate, keying, matte, noise, perspective, simulation, stylize, time, audio and transitions, plus all nine layer styles.
- 3D: 3D layers, one- and two-node cameras with depth of field, parallel, spot, point and ambient lights with soft shadows.
- Puppet tools: pins on a mesh, real-time pin recording and follow-through for hair and cloth.
- Export: H.264 MP4, ProRes MOV (with alpha), HEVC, AV1, WebM (VP9 or AV1), image sequences (PNG, JPEG, TIFF, 32-bit EXR), animated GIF and WAV/AIFF. There is no FFmpeg inside – every encoder is written in Rust.
Two features go beyond a straight copy. Lottie works both ways: you can export a composition as Lottie JSON for websites and apps, and import a Lottie file as a new composition, without a plugin. And projects are readable JSON (.ecproj), so they diff cleanly in Git.
EffectCraft vs After Effects: how close is it?
The honest answer is "close on paper, unproven in practice". The README says nearly every After Effects feature exists, but adds that existing is not the same as behaving exactly like After Effects, and that nothing yet compares its renders with After Effects automatically. The main limits right now:
| Question | Answer (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Can it open .aep / .aepx projects? | No – it saves its own .ecproj format |
| Do After Effects plug-ins run? | No |
| Is it ready for client work? | The developers say not yet |
| Most tested platform | macOS; Linux and Windows users have reported basic interaction bugs |
| Price | Free, open source (MIT or Apache-2.0) |
So EffectCraft is a good way to learn motion graphics without a subscription, to make web animations via Lottie, or to automate renders. If you deliver paid projects or exchange .aep files with a studio, keep After Effects for now.
How to download EffectCraft
- Open the Releases page of the
storytold/effectcraftrepository on GitHub, or the EffectCraft page on getartcraft.com. - Pick your installer: a universal macOS app; Windows MSI or portable zip (x64, x86 and native ARM64); Linux AppImage, Flatpak, deb, rpm or tar.gz; or a FreeBSD tarball.
- Or skip the install and try the web build, which runs in the browser via WebAssembly.
Developers can build it themselves with Rust 1.95 or newer (cargo run --release -p effectcraft). Only download from the official GitHub repository or getartcraft.com – popular new open-source apps attract fake download sites.
EffectCraft for AI agents (MCP and command line)
Every menu item and timeline action in EffectCraft goes through one command registry, so the same actions are available from a command-line tool, a JSON control channel and an MCP server for AI agents. In practice that means an assistant such as Claude can set keyframes, change properties and start renders without clicking through the interface – for example rendering a composition to MP4 from the command line. The repository ships a ready-made MCP configuration.
The ArtCraft founder has said the Crafting Apps were written with heavy help from Anthropic's Claude; the EffectCraft repository itself contains CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md files for AI coding agents.
Who should try EffectCraft?
- Students and hobbyists who want to learn keyframing, expressions and compositing without paying for Creative Cloud.
- Web and app designers who need Lottie animations.
- Linux users, who have never had a native After Effects.
- Developers who want to script or automate motion graphics.
Professionals with existing After Effects projects, third-party plug-ins or tight deadlines should treat it as something to test, not a replacement – yet.
FAQ
Is EffectCraft free? Yes. It is open source and dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. There is no subscription.
Is EffectCraft made by Adobe? No. It is made by the ArtCraft team and is not affiliated with Adobe. After Effects is named only to describe what EffectCraft imitates.
Can EffectCraft open After Effects files?
Not as of October 2026. It cannot open .aep or .aepx projects, and After Effects plug-ins do not run.
Does EffectCraft work on Linux and in the browser? Yes. There are Linux builds (AppImage, Flatpak, deb, rpm, tar.gz) and a WebAssembly build that runs in a browser tab.
Can EffectCraft export Lottie?
Yes – File ▸ Export ▸ Lottie JSON writes .json or .lottie, and it lists anything Lottie cannot express. It can also import Lottie files.
When was EffectCraft released? Its first commit is dated 1 October 2026, and it was announced with the other Crafting Apps in early October 2026. It is in alpha and changes quickly.
