Example feedback

Sample feedback for a short high school essay arguing that schools should start later (excerpt).

  1. Overall: 74/100. A clear position with some good reasons, but the evidence is thin and the ending repeats the introduction.
  2. Thesis and focus: 16/20 - The claim that school should start after 8:30 is clear, but the second paragraph drifts to homework.
  3. Evidence and support: 12/20 - Two claims have no example or source. Add one concrete fact or a short personal example for each.
  4. Fix these first: 1. Paragraph 2, sentence 3: 'Teens are tired' needs support. Say why, for example sleep needs or a bus schedule.
  5. Rewrite example: 'Many students struggle to wake up for a 7:30 start' becomes 'A 7:30 start leaves many teenagers with less sleep than they need, and their first class suffers.'

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Paste your essay

Add the text, and optionally the assignment prompt or your teacher's rubric on the first line.

  2. Step 2

    Pick your level

Middle school, high school, college, English learner or college application essay.

  3. Step 3

    Read the feedback and revise

Get a score by criteria, the top fixes in priority order and one rewritten example. Revise, then grade again.

A first read before the real grader sees it

This free AI essay grader reads your essay the way a writing teacher would on a first pass. It scores five areas (thesis and focus, evidence, organization, style, grammar), tells you what already works and lists the first fixes that will improve the essay most, each tied to a specific sentence. It also rewrites your weakest passage so you can see the change, not just read about it. The score is an estimate to help you revise. It does not replace your teacher, a writing center or the rubric your assignment is graded by.

How to Get the Most Useful Feedback

Paste the assignment prompt or rubric on the first line. When the grader knows what the essay is supposed to do, its comments match your assignment instead of general writing advice.

Choose the level that fits. Feedback for a middle school paragraph should not sound like feedback for a college argument. Then revise the first two or three fixes only, and grade again. Fixing everything at once usually makes the essay worse; fixing the biggest problems first makes it better.

What the Five Criteria Mean

Thesis and focus: does the essay make one clear claim and stay on it? Evidence and support: is every claim backed by a fact, example or quote, and is it explained? Organization: does each paragraph have one job, and do transitions connect them? Style and word choice: are sentences varied and precise, without filler? Grammar and mechanics: spelling, punctuation and sentence errors.

Most essays lose points on the first two. Grammar is the easiest to fix but matters least to the grade of a strong argument.

Using It Responsibly

Use the feedback to learn what to change, then do the rewriting yourself. Pasting generated text back into an assignment may break your school's rules on AI use, so check your course policy.

An automated grader can misjudge creative or unusual writing and cannot know your teacher's priorities. Treat the numbers as a guide for revision, and ask your teacher or a writing center for the grade that counts.

Frequently asked questions

Is this AI essay grader really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no credits to buy. A light hourly limit only stops automated abuse.

How accurate is the score?

It is an estimate meant to guide revision, not a grade. Your teacher's rubric and judgment decide the real grade, so use the criteria breakdown and the fix list rather than the single number.

Can I use my teacher's rubric?

Yes. Paste the rubric or the assignment prompt on the first line before your essay and the feedback will follow those criteria.

How long can my essay be?

The box takes up to about 4,000 characters, roughly 600 words. For a longer paper, grade it one section at a time.

Is my essay stored?

Your text is sent to an AI model to write the feedback. Do not paste personal details you would not want processed, such as your full name or student ID.
